As "Surintendant de la musique de la chambre du roi" and "Maître de musique de la reine", Antoine Boesset (1587-1643) was the most important composer at the court of Louis XIII. He was admired by his contemporaries and posterity for his "Airs de cours" and his interludes for the ballets so appreciated by the king. The pieces recorded here are, however, sacred works, although it is clear that even in French convents the boundaries between stage and pulpit could occasionally blur. Since his son Jean-Baptiste (1614-1685) succeeded him at court, and his contemporaries already deliberately confused father and son, it is not quite clear from which Boesset these spiritual treasures actually come. In view of the enchantingly beautiful interpretation of the Ensemble Correspondances under Sébastien Daucé, this seems rather irrelevant.
