Luis de Briceño (early 17th century) deserves the credit for having established the guitar and the Spanish percussion technique in France, although there must have been fierce resistance on the part of the lutenists, who certainly immediately recognized a dangerous competition in the easier to handle instrument. His works allow the interpreters a great deal of creative freedom, which Vincent Dumestre and Le Poème Harmonique gratefully exploit. The result is once again a perfect work of art that is far more than just a recording with worthwhile rarities of early guitar music.
