Gluck is famous above all as the leading opera composer of the second half of the eighteenth century. For its part, musicology has long had to cope with difficulties in the study of his symphonies: no extant autographs, only contemporary copies, no clearly documented performances, the ever-present danger of a false ascription – which means that only a few scholarly publications so far have been dedicated to Gluck's symphonic oeuvre. Although the artists performing on this new recording thus do not at all claim to have found the »philosophers' stone, « they do believe that the »ascriptions« brought together here should maintain their »authenticity« until the contrary is proven. All the symphonies are pervaded by a depth of emotion that one would otherwise associate – among the composers who felt at home in Vienna during the eighteenth century – only with Mozart.
