Since Bach did not note any information on instrumentation for his Art of the Fugue BWV1080, often regarded as a musical testament, the work gave rise to countless arrangements for the most diverse instruments in the past. This recording is the culmination of a series of performances in which the musicians of the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin experimented with an unusual concept: instead of simply following Bach's arrangement of fugues and canons, they varied both the instrumentation and the macrostructure of the work in such a way that this experiment developed into an exciting musical parlour game - entirely for the pleasure of the listener
