The Second Book of Madrigals by Carlo Gesualdo was written in Ferrara, where he had travelled in 1594 to prepare for his second wedding to Leonora d'Este. But the lively environment of this cultural center will be the workaholic Gesualdo have also inspired further compositions. When studying the themes Gesualdo went at any rate even more radically to work than in the first volume. The second volume, also in 1594, shows how great his ability was to capture the poetic depth to use the lyrics as a source for his musical ideas and to implement tchem.
On the present recording the Madrigals sung by the all-male ensemble Delitiae Musicae. The last two titles on the CD are dedicated to Gesualdo's only instrumental compositions.
