Filmmaker Frank Schaeffer helped fund the 1995 Holland Festival premiere of Stockhausen’s only work for quartet. Clearly few films match air traffic control to intensive string-rehearsal footage. Schaefer’s documentary covers the preparation, and some parts of the premiere, but frustratingly, it doesn’t include a complete performance of the Helicopter Quartet at the end. For the full 25-minute piece, you’ll need the Arditti’s CD on Montaigne, which preserves all of this premier performance, plus a further studio recording, incorporating some revisions to the score.
