Our edition of the complete string quartets of Mieczyslaw Weinberg with the Quatuor Danel continues along its highly promising course. Weinberg’s fifth string quartet numbers among the series of chamber masterpieces composed by him during his first three Moscow years. At the same time, it is the first of his quartets with movements displaying generic titles (Melody, Humoresque, Scherzo, Improvisation, and Serenade). While this quartet and the ninth quite audibly continue to dialogue closely with Shostakovich, Weinberg’s fourteenth string quartet seems to set out on a new creative journey. Its five movements continue without a break, but each of them has a completely different thematic character. Weinberg avoids all references to the character or the tempos of the movements – which means that we encounter the exact opposite of that which we find in the fifth quartet.
