Lee Santana, known mainly as a lutenist and theorbo player (e.g. as duo partner of the gambist Hille Perl), has long been involved with the various, sometimes almost forgotten members of the lute family. For this reason, this recording is also a very personal examination of the music and, above all, the spirit of the times of this epoch, of the diversity, playfulness and musical variability of the dance, court and art music of the time. A substantive focus of the interpretation is therefore not the exact reproduction of the manuscripts that have been handed down, but rather Lee Santana's personal (although acquired through profound knowledge of history) view of the way in which this music was played, heard and understood in its time.
