Paul Peuerl (1570- after 1625) is probably known to very few people as a composer. And yet his works were popular and relatively widespread during his lifetime. Little is known of his life: Born in Stuttgart, he was organist in Horn (Lower Austria) from 1601 and in the same capacity in Steyr (Upper Austria) from 1609. He held this office until 1625 and also made a name for himself as an organ builder. In his contract of employment for Steyr, he was expressly granted permission to earn extra money as a musician "at weddings, preitspillen and mall times" of the citizens. His first collection of 1611 certainly owes its origin to this extra income: Neue Padouan, Intrada, Däntz unnd Galliarda, auf allen Musicalischen Saitenspielen gantz lustig zugebrauchen. What is special about these works - apart from their inventiveness - is that here, for the first time, four-movement suites are available that were designed as such by a composer and could not, as was usual until then, be assembled ad libitum by the user from a larger selection. Peuerl's second printing of 1613 was then devoted to vocal music: Weltspiegel. That is: Neue teutsche Gesänge sampt zweyen Canzonen. Lorenz Duftschmid and his ensemble ARMONICO TRIBUTO have now recorded a selection from both collections for us with all the given imaginative possibilities and thus contributed significantly to the salvation of the almost lost Paul Peuerl.
