It is now (almost) an established fact that Georg Philipp Telemann's late works rank with the best music composed in Germany between 1755 and 1767. What is above all surprising is the innovative style proper to his sacred music in particular and not showing the least trace of his advanced age. Telemann had a special sixth sense for good musical poetry. During his long life he followed the development of German poetry from the end of the Silesian school to Klopstock, from the high baroque to the beginning of the classical era. The fact that the changes in language had consequences for compositional style is everywhere in evidence in Telemann's firmly text-based settings. The three cantatas (odes) recorded here for the first time are genuine solitaires in their magnificent instrumental and vocal realization and masterly and surprisingly unconventional manner.
