The saxophone was invented by the Belgian instrument maker Adolphe Sax in the middle of the 19th century. Although it took a considerable time till the instrument was adopted in the world of classical music, its versatility, tonal spectrum and expressive possibilities are perfectly suited to the classical idiom.
This new recording presents Gabriel Fauré’s (1845-1924) exquisite Fantaisie for flute and piano Op. 79, whose seductive charm works very well on the saxophone, the robust first violin sonata by Edvard Grieg (1843-1907) and the famous Sonata Op. 94 by Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953), first written for flute, but later transcribed by the composer for violin; needless to say the saxophone adds an extra dimension to this vibrant and melodious work.
Played by Italian master saxophonist Giuseppe Laterza, with Francesca Bandiera at the piano.
