One of the greatest innovations of Baroque music is undoubtedly the figured bass, about which Bach himself wrote: “The figured bass is the whole basis of music, it is played with both hands, so that the left hand plays the written notes, while the right hand plays consonances and Adds dissonances, creating a pleasing harmony for the praise of God and the just pleasure of the senses. Because there is a basso continuo, the melody can unfold in all its fullness and acquires that dazzling relief that is so characteristic of Baroque aesthetics.
The great majority of the pieces are 'preludes', ie they await a continuation: mostly a sung chorale, the theme of which is found in the prelude, which serves to set the tone for the gathering; these chants were sung during Lutheran celebrations. And they're missing because we focused on the instrumental. Bach and his fellow composers contributed a little, leaving us instrumental works that touch the soul and seem to stand on their own.
The pieces on this CD come mainly from two collections of Bach's works: the third part of the Clavier-Übungen and the 18 large preludes for organ.
