This ode was composed to celebrate the birthday of Queen Anne of England and was given the title "for peace". This was a reference to the peace treaty of Utrecht, which the monarch was to sign shortly afterwards and which put an end to the War of the Spanish Succession. Six years earlier, the 22-year-old composer had shown in his sacred music what he had learned from Italian opera - the result was the powerful and passionate Dixit Dominus.
