Vol. 7 of our discovery tour through the Northern German organ baroque is devoted to yet another master: the Hamburg-born Johann Praetorius, one of the seven children of the organist Hieronymus Praetorius and the organist and church secretary at the Church of St. Nicholas in Hamburg beginning in 1612. It is only recently that musicological investigations have identified him as the author of a number of organ works formerly attributed to other composers, some of them famous names. These works are exclusively of choral basis and are founded both on Gregorian and Reformation cantus firmi. The contrapuntal mastery and the variety of compositional structure in all these works indeed demonstrate a quality matching that of the works of other composers of the times. Friedhelm Flamme interprets the pieces on the organ of the Holthausen Cloister near Büren. Although this instrument has a mere seven stops, its tonal potential is rich and varied.
