Geirr Tveitt was a virtuoso of both the piano and the orchestra (not for nothing was he chief orchestral arranger for NRK, the Norwegian Radio), and his music encapsulates the spirit of Norway’s folk tradition as completely as does that of Grieg and Sæverud. His Fourth Piano Concerto of 1947 is highly original and, as its subtitle suggests, evokes the extraordinary display and movement of the Northern Lights. It is superbly played by Håvard Gimse and the Scottish Orchestra under Bjarte Engeset. The Variation, in which Gimse is joined by Gunilla Süssmann, are also full of character and colour, even if they somewhat outstay their welcome. Strongly recommended • Penguin Guide, January 2009
