Of the two performances here, Jeremy Summerly’s account is undoubtedly the more eloquently serene; it is beautifully controlled and modulated, rather after the fashion of the famous Willcocks/King’s College accounts of the Byrd Masses. The harmonic pungencies are cleanly presented but unexaggerated and—compared with Hillier—the music’s lines, although by no means bland, flow in relative tranquility.
