The Kodály players are not renowned for wearing their hearts on their bow-arms, and their performance of the first movement of the Death and the Maiden, though not lacking in point and responsive intensity, is not as sharply extrovert in its associations with mortality as some. They find the heart of the work in the slow movement variations, which they open very intimately and they play with their usual humanity and feeling, if without quite the potency of the Lindsays. This is certainly a performance to live with, even if it does not dwell on the tragedy of Schubert’s inspiration and the playing in the Quartettsatz, agitated and lilting by turns, is also very fine. The recording, which has a natural presence, is well u to the high standard of this fine series.• Penguin Guide, January 2009
