Louis XIV dedicated his whole life to his vision of the French state, which he wanted to lead like a shining sun. From the sunrise of the Lever du Roy, the wake-up ceremony with early mass still heard from the state bed, followed a day that was fixed down to the smallest detail, during which court society gathered around the king like the planets around the sun. The sunset of the royal day, the Coucher du Roy, was accompanied by music: pièces en trio were played, which Jean-Baptiste Lully, the all-powerful Surintendant de la Musique du Roy, had shaped according to the model of the Italian Sonata da chiesa - just another indication of the king's quasi religious position as head of France. Marin Marais, royal court musician of the generation after Lully, put all his diligence into the Pièces en trio composed for the Sun King, in order to meet the requirements of the great model Lully on the one hand and to possibly even surpass him in musical fantasy on the other.
