The association of Denis Gaultier with Apollo in a 17th century lute manuscript is not as bold as it might at first seem: the lutenist was held in high esteem by his contemporaries, for many he was indeed the epitome of the lute genius, the "incomparable", and one of the few who were able to "speak" to their listeners with music. His music placed high demands on the lutenist, the lute and also on the listener, because with the knowledge of what was possible, Gaultier took the instrument, and everyone else with him, to the limits.
