At the time of their release, the six Partitas caused quite a stir among music lovers in Germany. Celebrated by some and criticized by others, however, the work has always been considered a milestone in the compositional process for harpsichord. Most critics emphasized the extremely high demands on the technical level and complexity of the composition. Johann Nikolaus Forkel wrote in his Bach biography: "One had never seen and heard such excellent piano compositions. Whoever learned to recite some of the pieces quite well, could make his fortune in the world with it." The French harpsichordist Pascal Dubreuil sets new standards in the history of interpretation of these works with this recording.
