How unaffectedly piquant and yet full and sweet!« These words are from a review published in the Neue Freie Presse of Vienna after the premiere of Johann Strauss’s seventh operetta, Das Spitzentuch der Königin (The Queen’s Lace Handkerchief). The melodies of this virtually forgotten work continue to be familiar to us from the waltz »Rosen aus dem Süden« (Roses from the South), but the operetta too is a masterpiece very much meriting its renaissance – together with other operettas by the Waltz King in addition to Die Fledermaus. The Dresden State Operetta is presenting stage productions of selected works based on the exemplary critical editions in the New Johann Strauss Complete Edition, and cpo is recording these productions for release on CD. A discographic stroke of luck – and you can already look forward to Der Carneval in Rom and Prinz Methusalem!
