A speciality of French opera is opera material on sacred subjects. Rodolphe Kreutzer's Tragédie lyrique La Mort d'Abel (1823) enjoyed the enthusiastic approval of Romantics such as Hector Berlioz, not least because of the impressive portrayal of the rebellion of demons and Satans against God.
