In the decades around the turn of the 20th century, the violin enjoyed a star moment of its own as the ‘singing’ instrument par excellence. The Danish romances for violin have slumbered for many years, primarily because romantic music as such experienced a violent decline in Denmark during long periods of the 20th century.
On her new album, Romance, highly renowned violinist and concert master of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Christina Åstrand brings together a personal selection of rarely heard items from the classical Danish repertoire for violin, written by Otto Malling (1848-1915), P.E. Lange-Müller (1850-1926), Ludolf Nielsen (1876-1939), August Enna (1859-1939), Carl Nielsen (1865-1931), Louis Glass (1864-1936), Niels W. Gade (1817-1890) and Johan Svendsen (1840-1911) – several of the works found in the archives of the Danish National Library, having never been published or recorded before.
Under the direction of Jukka Iisakkila, Christina Åstrand and the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra prove to be ideal interpreters of this kind of music, poised between charm and soulfulness.
