Padua and Cividale are the two centers of north-eastern Italy that preserve the most consistent and interesting evidence of the dramatic representations that, during the Middle Ages, accompanied the liturgical celebrations. In the cathedral of Padua, in particular, the dramatic offices constituted a persistent and extensive practice, which can be reconstructed through a series of manuscript sources from the 13th-15th centuries preserved in the Capitular Library at the Bishop's Curia: the Liber Ordinarius ms. E57 (13th century) and the two Processionals mss. C55 and C56 (XIV-XV century). In the rich and varied liturgical-musical repertoire of the Paduan tradition, the songs destined for the sacred triduum and the Visitatio sepulchri stand out for their dimension and quality. In fact, during the celebration of the Easter office, when the mystery of the passion is revealed in the triumph of the resurrection, the rite celebrated in the cathedral was transformed into a real liturgical drama, recited and sung by actors, with the support of an adequate staging the events represented.
