Alto saxophonist/composer Steve Coleman constantly explores new ideas and looks for new challenges. For this new recording he travelled to Brazil and brought together musicians from a variety of backgrounds: flautist Magic Malik, bassist Sarah Murcia, guitarist Nelson Veras, American musicians from his regular working group and three young Brazilian percussionists (who spoke no English).
Coleman sketched out elements of his compositions to the musicians and allowed the music to be created spontaneously in the studio. Listening to this new opus, and viewing the documentary that shows the way Coleman works, the listener begins to get an idea of his incredible vitality that inspires the other musicians. For instance, in a remarkable fifteen-minute DVD sequence, Coleman renders a heartfelt homage to Charlie Parker, performing a duo with the incredible nineteen-year-old drummer Marcus Gilmore, grandson of Roy Haynes.
A new adventure into previously uncharted territories, Weaving Symbolics offers music that has the rare and audacious ambition of combining reflection and intuition, composition and improvisation, mathematics and poetry, the articulated and the intangible.
