When Purcell published his Sonata's of III parts in 1683, he claimed to have taken the "most fam'd Italian masters" as his model. There is often speculation as to whose music Purcell might have meant. Jaap Schröder and the Arcadia Ensemble do not want to give a definitive answer with their recording, but rather show one of many possibilities. But if one listens to the trio sonatas by Bononcini, one is convinced of this variant, because one can very well imagine that a brilliant composer like Purcell was inspired by this delightful music.
