Vol. 2 of our complete edition of George Onslow's trios again demonstrates that the rediscovery of this music combining artistry and virtuosity as well as intimacy and dramatic expression is long overdue. Onslow's late Trio op. 83 from the 1850s, which seems to have been his last composition, is distinguished from his earlier trios by its length, its lyricism, and the depth of its themes occasionally reminiscent of Mendelssohn. The much earlier Trio op. 3, a work dedicated to Dussek, Onslow's first piano teacher, was not composed prior to 1807. Beethoven's musical language is still in clear evidence in this early work, but Onslow's precocious musical maturity is also revealed, especially in its little declarations of stylistic independence and daring. As on Vol. 1, the Trio Cascades from Cologne takes charge of this refreshing and charming interpretation of music soon to be published in score form by the Accolade Musikverlag.
