The composition of the music for the ballet "Romeo and Juliet" turned out to be rather problematic for Prokofiev for an obvious reason: "Living people can dance, the dead cannot", he wrote as an explanation. The original score was rejected by the Bolshoi Theatre as "untancible", and its intention to give the story a happy ending, as opposed to the original, was also rejected. However, the revised score, the highlights of which can be heard on the present CD, still proves to be a milestone in the ballet repertoire and a masterpiece of Prokofiev.
