Ignaz Pleyel's extensive oeuvre even today in large part lies slumbering away in the archives. Incredible but true, for Pleyel would very much be able to hold his own side by side with Mozart and Haydn in today's concert world! During his lifetime Pleyel, Haydn's master pupil, enjoyed great esteem as an instrumental composer because of the skill with which he was able to adapt internationally to various styles. His clarinet concertos doubtless number among his most important compositions, and Jost Michaels ranks his first Concerto as the most important clarinet Concerto prior to Mozart. It is fascinating to hear how Pleyel follows a path through the Concerto with his simple initial theme and makes his way to the virtuoso release of the rondo after a slow movement. His clarinet double concerto, the Sinfonia Concertante, demonstrates to what extent he was able to exploit the whole palette of the instrument in this splendid teamwork by Dieter Kloecker and Sandra Arnold, who has already quite often performed successfully with Kloecker.
