Well known as a writer and theorist on music, F.W. Marpurg was also a composer whose work awaited rediscovery. While marked by the reminiscence of J.S. Bach his organ music already foreshadows the Romantic period to come. J.P. Kirnberger, musician to Princess Amalia of Prussia and friend of C.P.E. Bach, shared Marpurg's enthusiasm for the latter's father. The Variations on Vom Himmel hoch testify to his admiration for the great Johann Sebastian, one of whose most brilliant disciples he was. The Rémy Mahler organ of Suippes proves an ideal instrument for this repertoire, never before recorded.
