At the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in 1935 - over 150 years after the world premiere in Vienna - "The Abduction from the Seraglio" was heard for the first time in an Italian opera house. • In 1969 Zubin Mehta brought Mozart's Singspiel to Florence again, in the legendary production of Giorgio Strehlers. In 2002 it was again Mehta and the Maggio Musicale who presented a new "kidnapping" in Italy: the director, Bremen director Eike Gramss, was responsible for the production, the focus of which is on spoken theater. So Gramss took special care of the otherwise often neglected dialogues. He drew the Bassa Selim very sensitively as a torn character that fluctuates between two cultures and religions.
