After chamber music by Schaffrath, Heinichen, and Fasch the Epoca Barocca ensemble now surprises us with a selection of highly imaginative sonatas and trios by the minor Italian baroque master Giovanni Benedetto Platti. We know virtually nothing about Platti’s youth or training as a musician. He was born in Venice around 1700 and very early in his career moved to Germany, where he served Johann Philipp Franz von Schönborn, Prince Archbishop of Bamberg and Würzburg, at his Würzburg court. Platti was a versatile musician who sang, played the violin, violoncello, flute, and harpsichord, and composed. His musical oeuvre, always of high quality, is distinguished by a strong feel for structure and form. Many have reckoned Platti among the composers of »lesser importance,« but this recording reopens the case on his behalf.
