The production at the Cologne Opera is of a traditional kind. The ensemble is very good at singing and acting on stage. Ferruccio Furlanetto sings an involved Leporello. Thomas Allen is a solid Don Giovanni. Carol Vaness is for me an excellent Donna Elvira with a tendency to dramatic voice development. Carol James also sings the Donna Anna in this direction. There are opinions that consider these castings too "dramatic". I don't hear it that way, but it should be pointed out. Andrea Rost sings an enchantingly beautiful Zerlina, a special timbre of "fine powdery flair Also the Masetto by Thomas Dorn is convincing.
James Conlon conducts
convincingly.
All in all, a conventional performance based on the interaction of singing and acting, which I already hear vocally above average.
