Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) is one of the most important European composers of the second half of the 19th century and a central figure in German Romanticism. During his lifetime he was considered a "traditionalist" (and thus not very progressive). This made him the most important antagonist of Richard Wagner and the "New German School" he represented. It was only after Brahms's death, largely through Arnold Schoenberg's famous essay "Brahms, the progressive" (1933), that his work began to be re-evaluated in terms of its significance for modernism.
The present new edition of the Brahms Edition (a first version was published in 2008) contains the complete works of the Hamburg composer on 58 CDs: his four symphonies and other orchestral works, all the concerts, the piano music, the rarely played organ works, the popular chamber music, the extensive sacred and secular Choral music as well as all songs. When choosing the interpretations, the decision was made in principle for recordings by European specialists. Most of the key works in this new edition are international quality recordings that have rightly proven themselves in Brahms' discography for years: the symphonies in the highly acclaimed recordings of the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra under Jaap van Zweden, the piano and violin concertos with famous soloists such as Daniel Barenboim , Cécile Ousset and Yehudi Menuhin, the violin sonatas in the excellent new recording by Kristóf Baráti and Klára Würtz, the piano music by a whole range of specialists such as Håkon Austbø and Wolfram SchmittLeonardy, the chamber music recorded with Isabelle Faust, the Nash Ensemble, the Gutman Trio , the Brandis Quartet and others and "A German Requiem" in the timeless recording of the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra under Helmut Koch. The Brahms Edition offers a complete, encyclopedic overview of the work of one of the most important German composers on the basis of high-class interpretations. In terms of quantity and quality, there is no other Brahms' collection of works of this kind on the market.
The recordings summarized in the Brahms Edition were made between 1955 and 2012. They are mainly digital productions from the 1990s and 2000s, supplemented by outstanding recordings from the analog era. The booklet contains notes on the works as well as a biography of Brahms.
