Girolamo Frescobaldi (1583-1643) is without doubt the most influential figure in the field of harpsichord in the first half of the seventeenth century. He left a vast legacy of compositions for the harpsichord and the organ, and these works proved fundamental to the evolution of both instruments. His distinctive writing style incorporated new ideas with stylistic flair, giving the performer the toccatistic and imaginative freedom typical of the Renaissance period.
