German violinist/composer Friedrich Seitz performed widely as a soloist and chamber musician, as well as working as a conductor and founding the first music school in Magdeburg. The Concertos for Violin and Piano or Schüler-Konzerte (‘Student Concertos’) are designed as introductions to violin technique, Seitz’s genius being to create student works that are always tuneful and interesting, with flowing and expressively inventive melodies, wonderful slow movements and plenty of carefully curated technical fireworks. This second volume takes us up to Seitz’s ambitious and beautiful final Schüler-Konzert No. 10. Volume 1 can be heard on 8.573801. ● This recording follows Vol. 1 (8.573801) released in December 2017 as part of the 19th Century Violinist Composer series, and completes the set of ten concertos. These two volumes represent the only commercially available recordings of almost all of these works. ● While ‘student concertos’ might not seem that rewarding as a recording project, Seitz’s works have a quality and panache that transcends their pedagogical origins. These recordings are not only an enjoyable listen, but are of course a useful reference for thousands of violin students all over the world. Violinist.com commented on Vol. 1, ‘What would we do without these beloved student concertos? [Pieces] which have proved enduringly popular vehicles for young performers since they were published...’ ● American Record Guide also wrote: ‘Hyejin Chung plays cleanly and in tune, and Warren Lee is obviously not challenged at all by the piano part. This would be very helpful for students learning these works.’
