Hardly any printed editions of the works of the composers who worked in the imperial city of Vienna are available. The Thirty Years' War and its consequences, a devastating plague epidemic and finally the invasion of the Turks up to the city walls of Vienna were not favourable conditions for a flourishing cultural life. But the Habsburgs, music-loving as they were, entertained a large court orchestra with up to 50 instrumentalists and almost 40 singers.
