Johann Philipp Krieger, the scion of an old Nuremberg family of craftsmen, nevertheless received a comprehensive musical education at an early age and very soon manifested his extraordinary talent. He studied under Rosenmüller and Volpe in Italy and later served as court music director under Johann Adolph I in Weißenfels, holding this post until his death. Krieger was one of the leading German composers of his generation. In 1688 he published the VII Sonate a due Violini (and basso continuo); in its form this work reflects the stylistic influence of the Northern German string tradition, which, in turn, is stamped by English consort music. The irresistible appeal of the sonatas rests on the modern flair of the virtuoso treatment of the violins as well as on the remarkable variety of their themes and vibrant affective shifts. Italian influence is also very much in evidence. And once again the Parnassi musici ensemble demonstrates its knowledge of the fine points of baroque performance practice in a spirited and imaginative interpretation.
