Andra Darzina, born in Australia and of Latvian family heritage, studied in Adelaide and with Wolfram Christ in Berlin on a Churchill Fellowship and a DAAD Scholarship. She passed her concert examination with distinction and has been honored with prizes such as the second prize at the Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition in Great Britain. Along with the well-known organist and composer Jürgen Essl, Andra Darzina developed an idea for »Viola-Classics.« The result is a magnificent and vibrant production of the most important viola concertos. For cpo she has recorded concertos by Hoffmeister, Stamitz, and Michael Haydn. Jürgen Essl joins her in the performance of the Concerto for Viola, Organ and Strings. The viola concertos of Carl Stamitz and Franz Anton Hoffmeister are de rigueur for viola players all over the world. They are mandatory fare at music competitions, conservatory examinations and orchestra auditions. But the more Andra Darzina teaches them, the more beauty, elegance and even wit she finds in them. Concerning the Concerto of Michael Haydn with an unusual scoring for organ, viola and strings Darzina is enthusiastic: »This work was a genuine discovery for me! I'm completely enchanted by the combination of organ and viola! Incidentally, the original cadenzas in the first and second movements were written by Jürgen Essl.«
