As a commentary on the overture by the composer suggests, it is about a piece of "children's life", about a life-threatening test which children have to pass beyond the adult logic of the day. In Katharina Thalbach's production, this afterlife is clearly in the realm of shadows. Like the title figures in the prelude, a richly confused Grimm fairy-tale world appears in the Hexenritt, the orchestral prelude to the second picture. After the children's victory over the crunchy witch, who previously taught them to fear their own lust and fear between siren-like coquetry and abysmal ugliness, the refined circular structure of Thalbach's interpretation becomes apparent. Instead of joining the jubilant parents' rumbling joy of reunion, Hansel and Gretel sneak back to the liberated paradise of the fairy-tale shadow world, in order to be able to put the reality of their own lives, thoughts and dreams on the line again and again, together with the whimsical figures of their and our children's sound world, using the means of the imagination.
