The Mystery or Rosary Sonatas are still regarded today as the most detailed example of scordatura, a technique in which the strings are not tuned in G-D-A-E as usual, but in another way (the chordatura, i.e. the normal stamming, is found in the Rosary Sonatas only in the first sonata and the concluding Passacaglia). The other 14 sonatas are in different tunings, which allowed Biber to use unusual chord formations, which allowed a new spectrum of harmonies and textures and thus fully exploited the possibilities of the violin.
