After years of research and musical maturation, Alpha presents Combattimenti! Here, Vincent Dumestre performs the world premiere on disc of La Fiera di Farfa, accompanied by pure gems of Monteverdi sprofane vocal music. Marazzoli s La Fiera contains a parody of the famous Combatimento di Tancredi e Clorinda (composed a year earlier), so the label has chosen to present both works here. Composed in 1639, La Fiera is an operatic interlude, true drama set to music, as was practiced in 17th century Italian fairs. The piece was so well known that it was adapted for the stage by Bernini, played throughout the 18th century, and still popular during the 19th century. The recording also includes some extra pieces as a counterpart to La Fiera (including Hor ch el ciel, an emblem of early baroque music that would strongly influence later writing). Vincent Dumestre invites us to discover and rediscover masterpieces of the Italian Baroque. After his success on tour, here comes the CD!
