For many years Joseph Haydn’s brother, who worked as a professional musician exclusively in Salzburg, has been a special focus at cpo. Piece by piece, we have set ourselves the task of offering listening audiences the opportunity once again to experience the undervalued work of this gifted composer who was hardly second to his brother. Following the symphonies, we are now dedicating ourselves to a group of works that did not at all find representation in Joseph Haydn’s oeuvre. Five works by Michael Haydn for a quintet ensemble consisting of two violins, two violas, and basso have come down to us. In their varied shape, however, they are much less uniform, for example, than Mozart’s quintets: Haydn designated two of the quintets as divertimentos and then exceeded the classical number of four movements. This is entertaining court music on the highest level, and it is interpreted on the same highest level by the Haydn Quintet of Salzburg and its first violinist Hiro Kurosaki on historical instruments in a historical setting – the Kuenburg Palais in the heart of Salzburg. Things do not get more authentic than this!
