Melodiya presents a live recording of two 20th c. music classics by William Walton and Alfred Schnittke, the Viola Concerto and the Passacaglia for Orchestra respectively, made at the Grand Hall of the Moscow Conservatory in 1982. Yuri Bashmet and conductor Dmitri Kitayenko, here leading the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Moscow State Philharmonic Society, were the first performers of these works in the former USSR. Composer and violist Paul Hindemith premiered Walton’s 1929 viola concerto. Schnittke composed the Passacaglia, his first large-scale orchestral work, in 1980.
