The Language of the Unknown A film about Wayne Shorter Quartet Directed by Guido Lukoschek. • Filmmaker Guido Lukoscheks The Language of the Unknown enters the universe of one of the last living saxophone legends of Jazz. After his legendary work with Art Blakeys Jazz Messengers, the Second Miles Davis Quintet and his years with Weather Report, Wayne Shorter formed the Wayne Shorter Quartet in 2000, the first formation under his own name. He sees his celebrated soloists drummer Brian Blade, bassist John Patitucci and pianist Danilo Pérez less as sidemen than as equal elements of a living organism. They call their method Zero Gravity, an original state of music that they always re-conjure in the interaction, and which is the basis of their explorative journeys into new musical territory. The Language of the Unknown accompanies the great saxophonist and his band as they ready themselves for a concert on November 3, 2012, in the Salle Pleyel in Paris and observes the effect of the music on their creators, revealing surprising insights into the essence of their music and the creative spirit. Without doubt, one of the best jazz documentaries of all time. • Jazz Podium
