Baroque expert René Jacobs (conductor) and Michael Hampe (staging) guarantee a "Poppea" that sets new standards. The hand-picked ensemble of singers and the Concerto Köln complete the "must have" of this recording.
Claudio Monteverdi's oeuvre represents the first high point in the history of opera, one that significantly shaped the genre: his Orfeo from 1607 is considered by many to be the first real opera ever. At the beginning of the 17th century, when he was Kapellmeister at the court in Mantua, Monteverdi was already one of the greatest musicians of his time. in 1613, he was given the most honorable position in musical life at the time: the position of Kapellmeister at San Marco Cathedral in Venice. Around 1640, the first opera houses were founded in Venice and Monteverdi established himself as a sought-after opera composer. One year before his death, he wrote L'incoronazione di Poppea, which was performed several times in the 17th century. The original version seems to have been destroyed when the theater where it was first performed burned down in 1748. Renowned baroque expert René Jacobs has prepared one of the recognized new versions of the opera for the performance in Montpellier. Concerto Köln, the original sound ensemble with a passion for discovery and imagination, was founded in 1985 as an autonomously organized orchestra - and soon became one of the top ensembles for baroque and pre-classical music
