In contrast to the "child prodigies" Mozart and Mendelssohn, who, due to their short lives, had little time to exhaust their abilities, Camille Saint-Saens' life, which was very long by then standards, was more likely to be fatal. When he was born in 1835, Mendelssohn was only 26 years old, Chopin 25, but when Saint-Saens died at the age of 86 in 1921, he seemed to be a relic from bygone times - at least in France, where colleagues such as Ravel, Stravinsky and Satie were now playing completely different tunes. Nevertheless, his works fortunately did not fall into oblivion. With this CD, NAXOS begins a new series of Saint-Saens works for violin and piano, which form an important part of the chamber music that the composer devoted himself to promoting in Paris in the second half of the 19th century. The young French violinist Fanny Clamagirand, who received the highest critical acclaim for her interpretation of Saint-Saens' violin concertos, is considered one of the best violinists of her generation. With her duo partner Vanya Cohen she has been playing in and outside of France for several years. The present recording is a testimony to their wonderfully harmonious collaboration.
