Around 1600 John Dowland was certainly one of Europe’s best-known and most influential composers. His many journeys run like a red thread through his biography. He spent various years of his life in France, Germany, Italy, and Denmark, and everywhere he went he became acquainted with local composers. His music quickly spread throughout Europe, and his unique melodic intuition guaranteed him a string of »hits«. He was also one of the most financially successful musicians of his time and earned the highest salary in his posts at various courts on the Continent. It is thus hardly surprising that the music of this »world star« continued to be valued, arranged, and disseminated throughout Europe even a quarter of a century after his death. The countless compositions in Dowland’s style demonstrate the great importance attached by his pupil William Brade and other composers of the time to authentic sound in the redesign of the English pavan on the Continent.
