The Czech composer Bohuslav Martinů distinguished himself through his chamber music work and performed a essential contribution to the piano trio repertoire of the 20th century. With his fine feeling for balance and fullness of sound he found the ideal means of expression for his music. In Paris he wrote in 1930 the "Trio Nr. 1, Cinq Pièces Brèves" in a stimulating and virtuoso neoclassical style and thus aroused Stravinsky's great admiration. The "Trios No. 2 and 3", which were published in 1951 in America, are more ambitious in their scope and are more than impressive in their rhythmic expressiveness and peculiarity and elegiac movements are remarkable.
