When composing the Passion according to Saint Matthew for the Church of Saint Thomas in Leipzig, Bach had in mind a vast musical architecture, not only in terms of rhetorical organization, but also in terms of the leveling of sound sources ( two choirs, two orchestras…). The success of the company was total: the aspiration towards the absolute, the tumult of the senses which emerge from this mass of sound so balanced, so attentive to represent a tragic event which is at the heart of history, are immeasurable.
